Bolt vs Grab in Bangkok: Download Both

Published Edited 2 min read

The honest answer is not picking a team. Compare the fare, arrival time and pickup point every time you actually need a ride.

People keep asking me which one is better, Bolt or Grab. My real answer is: why are you trying to choose one? Download both.

Bangkok changes by the hour. One app might be cheaper at dinner and useless outside a club later. The cheaper fare can also come with a longer wait, cancelled drivers and a pickup point that makes no sense. Look at the whole offer, not only the big number.

My default routine

  1. Put the same destination into both apps.
  2. Compare the car price and estimated arrival.
  3. Check that the pickup pin is somewhere the driver can actually stop.
  4. Choose one ride, verify the plate and get in the correct car.

Bolt is often the value check. Grab is the app I lean on for the full ecosystem: rides, airport transport and food delivery. If you use Grab throughout the week, check the current GrabUnlimited trial and price inside the app. Read your eligibility, benefit caps, renewal date and cancellation terms before subscribing. Grab’s own plan page lists the offer; the version shown in your account controls what you can join.

The airport is where people make this harder than it is

Get online before leaving the terminal. Follow the instructions in the app to the designated pickup area and confirm the plate. Save your hotel address in English and Thai, plus a screenshot of the booking, in case your connection decides to act stupid.

Do not get off a long flight, walk toward the first person offering a car and negotiate while tired. You already have a price-comparison tool in your hand.

Late at night

Late-night availability and prices vary. The first driver may not accept your trip or find the exact club entrance. Give yourself a few minutes, move to a legal pickup point if the street is jammed, and keep enough battery to get home.

The best app is the one with a fair price, a driver who is actually coming and a pickup point you can both find.

I would never build the trip around street taxis alone. Some drivers are completely fine; some do not want the meter or do not want your destination. When a taxi is the practical choice, ask about the meter before the car moves and get out of the negotiation if it feels wrong.
