My $1,245 Bangkok Airbnb Mistake
The condo was fine. The decision was not. What my first international trip taught me about booking a solo stay in Bangkok.
My first trip to Thailand was also my first trip outside my country. I had no veteran-traveler routine. I saw people repeat “use Airbnb,” booked a condo for 31 nights and paid $1,245.75.
The place itself was fine. Park Origin had an okay room, a simple gym and a location that gave me a lot to explore. The key was left in the mailbox. I stayed for a full month, the guards got used to seeing me, and nobody checked the ID of women I brought upstairs during that stay. That is a memory, not confirmation of the building’s current visitor policy.
But when I learned what housing actually costs here, I realized how much I paid for “fine.”
Why I would choose a hotel for a first solo week
A hotel gives you reception, housekeeping, luggage help and somebody to call when something goes wrong. A good Bangkok hotel can also be cheaper than a short-stay condo once you count platform fees and what you lose.
For the kind of trip this guide covers, I also want the guest policy to be clear. Ask before booking:
- Are registered adult visitors allowed?
- Is there a joiner or visitor fee?
- Does reception hold an ID?
- Can a visitor join breakfast, and what does that cost?
Get the answer in writing when it matters to you. “Somebody on a forum said it was fine three years ago” is not a hotel policy.
When an apartment can still make sense
If you are staying a month, need a washer and kitchen, or you are traveling with a real group, an apartment may win. A house can also make sense for several friends going somewhere like Pattaya. That is different from a solo man paying a premium for one Bangkok week and losing hotel service.
My stay was 31 nights. Ask the property to confirm that it is permitted to host your booking and that your check-in follows the building’s rules.
The condo was not the scam. My lack of context was the expensive part.
I spent the money, lived through the learning curve and now know what I would do differently. That is the entire point of this site.
