Where to stay

Where should you stay in Bangkok?

My honest answer after staying here, wasting money here and learning which neighborhoods actually make sense for the trip you want.

Choose the base, not a winner

Four areas.
Four different weeks.

This is my order for a first-time solo visitor—not Bangkok law. Phrom Phong and Ekkamai can switch places depending on your personality.

My easiest first-timer pick

Phrom Phong

The easiest mix of nightlife, restaurants, malls, normal daytime life and English-friendly convenience.

Best forThe guy who wants options without living inside the loudest block

The tradeoffIt can feel polished and prices climb fast if you only choose the fanciest places

One useful reality

Asok1 BTS stopPhrom Phong

Don’t ruin a good hotel deal over one station. You can even walk it when the weather and your energy cooperate.

Nightlife beyond the hotel

Three scenes.
Find your kind of night.

Cowboy and Nana are established adult-nightlife zones. Ekkamai and nearby Thonglor are more like normal social nightlife: music, tables, groups and actually reading the room.

01 / Asok

The obvious strip

Women are out front, the neon is on and everything is compressed into one short street. This is why Asok nightlife feels destination-based.

The direct scene

Soi 4 and Nana get louder, later and much more obvious. Still, don’t assume what anybody does just because of where she is standing.

The social scene

Women are there, but this is regular club-and-bar territory. Dress decent, talk like a normal person and read the room. Different game.

From my first night

People say New York is the city that never sleeps. I say they just haven’t been to Bangkok yet.

My first night in Thailand, I was jet-lagged but too curious to stay inside. I saw somebody selling drinks on the street, bought a Corona for around ฿100–฿120, and ended up sitting there for two hours talking with random people.

Later, I heard live music and followed it into another place. That became my rule: go to the spot you saw online, but leave room for Bangkok to improve your plan. Don’t be weird. Don’t force anything. Be cool and people will fuck with you.

Arawana Regency Park Sukhumvit

Book it for the bed and the location—not the view.

Historical research range / date not recorded฿1,100–฿1,300per night, room only

฿1,500 with breakfast

I’m a bigger dude. Me and my girl could both sprawl out on that bed and still have space. The shower was decent, housekeeping came daily, and I didn’t hear much from the hallway or outside.

The tradeoff was my view: brick wall. If scenery matters, ask before booking. I don’t remember reception making an issue of my guest; they may have held her ID, but I’m not going to pretend I remember that part perfectly.

I booked an Executive Studio through Expedia, but the room I received looked like the one-bedroom suite: separate bedroom and living room, a table for about five and enough space for several people to hang out. I may have been upgraded, so don’t book the studio expecting my exact room.

Bistro M’s breakfast had cooked-to-order omelets, bacon, potatoes, fruit and pastries. Room service was good, alcohol came to the room, the city view was beautiful, and the hotel felt too large and busy for anybody to watch your every move.

AirbnbWhat I actually paid

The $1,245 mistake

Park Origin was fine. The Airbnb price was not.

This was my first trip outside the country. Everybody says, “Use Airbnb,” so I did. I paid $1,245.75 for 31 nights in a decent but average condo with an okay room and a simple gym.

Later, I paid around $350 a month for an apartment of a similar size on a yearly lease. That is a different commitment, property and set of fees, so it is not a like-for-like comparison. The lesson was to compare the total cost and service before booking—not to expect yearly-lease pricing for a holiday.

Bangkok hotels are already cheap. For a seven-day solo trip, why pay more to lose reception, housekeeping and somebody to call when shit goes wrong?

My booking was for 31 nights. Before booking a condo, ask the property to confirm that it is permitted to host your stay and that your check-in follows the building’s rules.

The actual recommendation

Pick the week you want—not the neighborhood somebody declared “best.”

Start with Phrom Phong if you want the easiest answer. Choose Ekkamai if karaoke, Japanese food, live music and exploring small bars sound more like you. Take an Asok deal without panicking. Sleep in Nana only when you knowingly want the action outside your window.
